Things to Do in Wonboyn

The picturesque fishing village of Wonboyn is located 30km south of Eden and is surrounded by pristine forests, unspoilt beaches and abundant animal and birdlife. It is the perfect getaway to our most remote and pristine beaches, renowned for its breathtaking beauty of water and wilderness and particularly significant for bushwalkers, birdwatchers and fishermen.

Wonboyn has a reputation second to none for some of the finest lake, estuary, beach and land based game fishing on the coast. Wonboyn Lake winds a 10-kilometre course before it meets a fairly narrow channel into the sea at Disaster Bay. The lake is renowned for its huge flathead and catches of bream, luderick, whiting, jewfish, trevally and tailor. From the beach, tailor, bream, salmon and whiting are all rewarded to the angler. The backwaters of the lake are dotted with oyster leases, fresh from the lake right on to your plate. There is a boat ramp, picnic area and accommodation options are all available.

You can find a small yet secluded picnic area at both ends of Disaster Bay called Greenglades & Baycliff. These two locations are renowned for fishing and that elusive trout can be yours for the eating. The local store can provide bait & fishing supplies as well as a wealth of local knowledge on the most desirable fishing locations. Best discovered by boat as you enter the lake mouth, sandy shoals and channels open to rolling surf and untouched beaches where dingos, dolphins and deserted sand hills can all be discovered.

oysters

Wonboyn Lake is one of NSW’s most remote and untouched oyster producing estuaries. Wonboyn Rock Oysters have been farming Sydney Rock Oysters for over 25 years and harvest a range of award-winning oysters with a flavour that is ‘creamy and sweet with a very mild aftertaste’. They are at the oyster shed most days, but phone ahead before your visit just to make sure.

nadgee wilderness

Wonboyn Lake is adjacent to Nadgee Nature Reserve, which provides important habitat protection for the area’s native plants and animals. Coastal tracks and trails lead to a range of magnificent vistas & catchment areas, such as the Nadgee and Little River systems and Nadgee Lake. Nadgee is the only coastal wilderness area in NSW.

BEOWA national park

Wonboyn borders the southern tip of historic Beowa National Park. Be transported back in time as you explore spectacular Green Cape precinct and its tales of a rugged and unforgiving nautical era. Green Cape is also one of the best spots on the coast for spring whale watching, with thousands of whales travelling the Humpback Highway south to Antarctica.
