Things to do in Bermagui

Bermagui hugs the edges of its stunning harbour and is situated under the shadow of Gulaga (Mt Dromedary), once an active volcano 60 million years ago. From Wallaga Lake in the north to Mimosa Rocks National Park in the south, Bermagui offers spectacular nature, adventure, fishing, history, local produce & dining experiences and of course, relaxation.

Bermagui’s coastline is both beautiful and intriguing. Explore iconic earth history, swim at one of the largest coastal lakes in New South Wales or splash about under a one-lane timber bridge to escape the sun. Join Camel Rock Surf School for fun surf lessons in a stunning natural environment, or paddle along the winding Bermagui River on a guided kayaking tour with Navigate Expeditions.

For an epic marine adventure, jump on a wildlife cruise to Barunguba (Montague Island), encountering dolphins, seals, penguins and soaring sea birds. Whale watching season runs from August to November, with Sapphire Coastal Adventures operating daily tours departing from Bermagui Harbour.

NATURE ADVENTURE

Explore Bermagui's lagoons, beaches & headlands where magnificent spotted gums, Angophoras and Burrawang palms abound. Biamanga, Gulaga and Mimosa Rocks National Parks have endless bushwalking opportunities with an array of rainforest and coastal ecosystems. Water sports reign no matter what the season and a swim in Bermagui's famous Blue Pool is a must.

WORLD-CLASS FISHING

Bermagui is a mecca for big game fishing, thanks to the close continental shelf & flow of warm southern currents. Charter boats operate deep sea, dive & game fishing trips with decades of local knowledge.  Bermagui has its own small commercial fishing fleet to reap the bounty of the abundant seafood, with Bermagui Fishermen’s Wharf the spot for taking your pick of the day's catch.

COASTAL living

The main street of Bermagui has a front row seat to stunning Horseshoe Bay, with bars, cafes and restaurants serving up delicious local fare. Grower’s markets are held weekly at Bermagui Country Club and there are also great vintage, homewares and apparel shops to be found. Festivals include Sculpture Bermagui in March and the Four Winds Festival each Easter.

WALLAGA LAKE

Wallaga Lake is home of Umbarra, the black duck – totem of the Yuin-Monaro people. Merrimans Island is a sacred place and can only be visited by Aboriginal people. Wallaga Lake is a paddlers & boater’s dream overlooked by Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) and Biamanga Mountain (Mumbulla).

Black swans in all their presence gather their young, and so it is with the birds, more than 200 species have been identified in the national park fronting the western side of the lake and the foothills of Gulaga and beyond.

As the largest lake in southern NSW, there is swimming, fishing, sailing, boating, water skiing, and prawning in season. Camping, boat hire, picnic and toilet facilities are available. The fishing is fabulous and the serenity of these natural surroundings offers a perfect place for a sail or swim with accommodation surrounding the water’s edge.

CAMEL ROCK

Camel Rock is an ancient rock formation, comprised of folded 470 million year old turbidite beds that were created by underwater avalanches 450 million years ago. When viewed from its southern side, you can see exactly why it got its name!

HORSE HEAD ROCK

A mecca for photographers, Horse Head Rock is believed to be approximately 500 million years old and is among the oldest rocks in NSW. Its sheer size and the unspoilt location is breathtaking.

MURUNNA POINT

Murunna Point is a significant Aboriginal place, with views to Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) and Wallaga Lake as it opens to the sea. Take the 1.5km Camel Rock to Murunna Point walking track, with spectacular coastal views.
