Adventure
The dictionary defines the word ‘adventure’ as taking part in an exciting, unusual or daring experience - we can challenge you no matter what your age or ability!
First pick your adventure playground – land, sea or air.
If water is your favourite environment, you are spoiled for choice. If you know what you’re doing and just need a boat ramp, click here for locations. If you are picking up a new skill – you can tick off surfing, ocean swimming, SUP, wave sailing (windsurfing), kiteboarding, canoeing, scuba diving, snorkelling and sailing on the Sapphire Coast. There are several wrecks covered in rust and coral, including the 135 metre Empire Gladstone which was wrecked on Haycock Point in Ben Boyd National Park in the 1950s. Head south another 20 kilometres (by road) to Eden to explore scuttled tugs, sea caves, and weedy sea dragons. There are many geological wonders too.
For those who like to get up close and personal with the denizens of the deep, a kayak tour is a must, but if you prefer a gentler experience, there are craft for hire in the still waters of Brogo Dam. If you like going further afield, boat hire is a relatively simple affair at all of the major ports.
Head into the wild blue yonder with a scenic flight by plane or helicopter – or learn to fly or skydive, all from Merimbula Airport.
By land, you can bushwalk, climb, abseil or explore by horse back or mountain bike – and for smaller adrenaline junkies, there is always action-aplenty at Merimbula’s Magic Mountain and it’s Tree Climb Challenge. The younger generation is also well catered for in terms of natural adventures – Potoroo Palace and its animal sanctuary, or National Parks and the Merimbula Aquarium offer a range of activities during the school holidays.
People watching and other adventurous activities include racing at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club and a regular program of life saving and swimming carnivals, wave sailing and surf boat races.
