Amazing whale encounters in @visiteden with @catbaloucruises! 😱 Have you ever looked to eye to eye with one of these magnificent ocean giants? It's not an uncommon occurrence on the #SapphireCoastNSW during spring, but you have to be out on the water to experience it! 🐳 'Mugging' occurs when a #whale (or whales) swim over to a boat to check out the humans on board, sometimes even raising their heads from the water to look you in the eye. 👀 The skipper must switch off the boat’s engine and wait for the #whales to leave, much to the delight of passengers. Our biggest friends are back in town. 😍 This beautiful #SouthernRightWhale was spotted in the sheltered waters just off #Tathra Wharf, and check out its size! These slow-moving swimmers are an endangered species with a shorter northern migratory route, making them a rare sight along the Australian east coast. 🐋 Through the @nswnationalparks Right Whale ID (RWID) program, southern right whales are monitored in #NewSouthWales waters through imagery of their unique markings captured by specially trained drone pilot volunteers. These photos help to identify individual #whales and track their movements, to protect them from disturbance and map areas of biological importance. Southern right whales are easily recognisable by their smooth back (no dorsal fin), white markings (callosities) and bulky shape. Our first whales of 2023! 🐳 It was all smiles on board @sapphirecoastaladventures last week as the team encountered a mother #HumpbackWhale and last season's calf a few miles out from #Merimbula Bay. 😍 Not only did they manage to spot these magnificent creatures but the adult breached 3 times! The northern migration is well and truly underway, which means it's only a few months until the main southern migration begins in around August. Wonderfully wild Middle Beach in @visitmerimbula is the perfect place for a secluded beach stroll as the sun comes up. 🙌 Just a stone's throw from #Merimbula town, Middle Beach is hidden beneath the base of a forested slope and spectacular colourful cliffs known to some as 'Rainbow Rock'. 🌈 Beautiful for swimming in calm conditions, however is subject to strong tides and swell so take care. Have you heard of @visiteden's historic Thompson's Point Baths? 😯 Almost invisible from sea level, this lovely #pool used to be a popular #swimming spot from the early 1900s through to the 1960s! It's Eden's oldest ocean pool and the southernmost #OceanPool in NSW! 💦 In its heyday, Thompson's Point Baths was deeper and had an access bridge. Please note that the pool is now only accessible at low tide around the rocks from #EdenWharf, and its shallow depth means it's not generally suitable for swimming, but it remains an awesome piece of history!
