‘The Sapphires’ comes to Bega

Thursday 30th May, 2019

The Sapphires is one of Australia’s best-loved stories. This multiple award- winning musical play, that inspired the film, is coming to the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre stage for the first time.

Four young Aboriginal women from regional Australia, who like singing country music, suddenly get the chance to change their tune and their lives. Wearing sequins and armed only with microphones they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War.

The Sapphires is a funny, heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of Tony Briggs’ mother – the incredible journey of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing Motown hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval. It is an energetic, fun and engaging play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams.

Held in and around the port, the festival embraces our maritime and bush heritage and celebrates with a huge party and fireworks on the Saturday night.

It’s the most unique whale watching experience the nation has to offer, and one that Australian Geographic ranked number one for whale watching destinations in Australia in 2014.

George Bass Marathon

Sunday 29th December, 2019 - Saturday 4th January, 2020

George BassThis is the longest, toughest surfboat race in the world!

Teams and single ski paddlers undergo a gruelling seven days on the open ocean, covering 190km’s of the coastline between Batemans Bay & Eden and contending with variable and wild surf conditions to launch and land their boats. They are elite athletes, skilled lifeguards and adventurers at heart.

The very first Bass was run in 1975 and was the brainchild of Bega Newspaper editor Curly Annabel who wanted to trace the journey of early explorer Surgeon Commander George Bass in 1797.

Surgeon Commander Bass with a crew of 6-navel oarsman rowed a longboat not unlike surf’s original double-ended clinker from Port Phillip down the NSW coast and around the southern end on Victoria mapping the coastline as they went. Annabel was at first thought mad and received no support, until then NSW State Secretary and Cronulla boat sweep, the legendary Nick Dixon, took up the cause and the rest, as they say, is history.
