Top Spots and Things to Do on the Sapphire Coast
How many of these have you ticked off your list ?
Discover our oceans and waterways
Whale watching in 2019 has been HUGE and there’s only a few weeks of the season left. So book now and discover the life in our oceans on a whale watching or discovery charter and choose from Bermagui, Merimbula or Eden. Whales, dolphins, sea eagles, albatross and even penguins abound. Or stay closer to shore – take an oyster tour of Pambula Lake, paddle the 400kms of rivers and estuaries or take the wharf trail and throw in a fishing line from one of our famous wharves.
Snap Bermagui’s natural icons
Bermagui’s gaining a reputation as one of the most “insta worthy” towns on the Sapphire Coast. Horsehead Rock, Camel Rock, The Blue Pool and the Cuttagee Tree are all feted and captured over and over again by photographers, nature enthusiasts and happy snappers alike. Find out all about them here. And while you’re in Bermi, why not stay overnight so you can stop in at one of the great restaurants, cafes and bars that dot this picturesque town.
Step out on an ancient coastline
Did you know that the Nadgee Wilderness is part of the largest unmodified coastal area in south east Australia and UNESCO has declared parts of it a World Biosphere Reserve. From it’s position just south of Eden this coastline is like nowhere else on earth. Spot passing whales as you journey on foot, take short hikes close to town or spend days on a coastal walk.
Take a history lesson
Take the Killer Whale Trail around Twofold Bay, uncover the dramatic history of whaling from 1828-1930 and learn about the unique relationship between whalers and the wild killer whales.
In Spring these sites become perfect vantage points to view humpback whales as they migrate close to the coast. Take the opportunity to explore Eden and spend some extra time at the Killer Whale Museum, the working port of Snug Cove, or head south to historic Green Cape Lighthouse.
Visit any number of Merimbula’s stunning beaches (Bar, Middle, Main or Mitchies, just to name a few). Or the Merimbula Boardwalk, which curls around top lake, its over-water timber structure providing a great opportunity to get up close and personal with pristine water and sea life.
In Merimbula town, discover great eateries serving the best of local produce and boutique stores featuring art, clothing, homewares and gifts. Take a seat on a whale watching tour, have a round of barefoot bowls or grab a picnic and head outdoors.
Have a close up animal encounter
From Merimbula Aquarium and Potoroo Palace in Merimbula (who’ve just had a baby koala) to On the Perch in Tathra (meet over 100 species of birds) Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre in Eden and the amazing whale watching charters on offer at Eden, Merimbula and Bermagui – get up close and personal with our native animals & sea life in very natural settings.
Come and discover a new part of town when you visit our Coast.
Merimbula, where the ocean meets the lake. Bermagui, where fishing is king. Pambula, where the town is little but the vibe is big. Bega, where the dairy heartland is. Eden, where the ships and whales come in. Tathra, where nature is, well, everywhere. Cobargo, where the artists live. And many more.View all blog posts
