Oysters have been farmed in Merimbula Lake since the 1900s and it is now a key producer of around 165,000 dozen oysters annually. It is a permanently open lake, created at the end of the last ice age when rising oceans drowned coastal river valleys. The oysters grown in its wide flats have a salty taste, reflecting the huge amount of water that flushes the lake with each tide. A stop at Wheelers will sate your appetite for fine seafood dining with ambience and views, cooked or fresh takeaway or a tour of Wheelers award-winning oyster husbandry and state-of-the-art factory.
