Whaling History

One can take a step back in time at Eden's Killer Whale Museum and relive the unusual and fascinating account of "Tom" the Killer Whale and other pods of Killers who used to assist in hunting in co-operation with the whalers of Twofold Bay.

Or re-discover the Kiah Inlet, home to the Old Davidson Whaling family. As the story held true, mainly in the case of the Davidsons, the locals still insist today that the killer whales would only help the Davidsons and would, in fact, thwart any opposition's attempts at harpooning whales.

The history of the shore based whaling station operated with the assistance of Tom and an unusual number of Orcas. The Orcas would herd migrating whales into Twofold Bay and keep them on the surface to allow an easier kill by the whalers.

Eden Killer Whale MuseumThe whalers would reward their assistants by feeding the delicacy of lips and tongue to the killers. They would also alert the whaler's to the presence of migrating humpbacks outside the bay. It is a fascinating and exciting story about a group of adventurous men and the incredible animals who learned to co-operate with each other.

These Orcas over time have established from a pod of three mobs or families and combined to form one rather unique pod.

Tom the killer whale lived to a ripe old age of approximately ninety years and his skeleton stands proud in an amazing history today at the Killer Whale Museum. This somewhat strange social behaviour has been described elsewhere such as off the west coast of North America.

Boyds Tower located at Redpoint, today still stands proud in all its history at Eden, and was once used as a vantage point for whalers in its day.
