Whale Watching on the NSW Sapphire Coast - the best in Australia

The Sapphire Coast has become a popular destination for whale watching. The number of whales to our waters appears to be increasing each year.

Whale Watching - the Best Time of Year

From late September to late November each year, Humpback Whales make their annual migration southwards along the east coast of Australia, bound for Antarctica after having spent several months in the warmer waters - some mating or giving birth.

It is on their southern migration that whales can be seen along the Sapphire Coast, with one of the unique features of this area being able to see them feeding.

At times coming very close to th shore, many more can be observed just off the coast, with Sperm and Killer Whales seen further out near the continental shelf.
There is still a wonderful Eden tradition. When a whale is sighted and reported to the Museum, a whale siren is sounded. This is no longer the signal for whalers to row out and harpoon the animal. It is a signal summoning interested persons to find a vantage point and watch these majestic, aquatic mammals make their way up or down the coast - a truly magnificent sight.

Types of Whales frequenting the Sapphire Coast

Although it is mainly Humpbacks frequenting our waters, Minke, Blue, False Killer's and Bryde's are becoming more common as are Southern Right Whales.
