You travel on the Towamba road climbing into the Great Dividing Ranges, over the top and down into the beautiful Towamba River Valley, which had an historic beginning, part of the road being the original route that was carved out by men using basic tools 162 years ago. The isolated way of life had remained until the 1920’s when gradually motor vehicles began to out number horse and bullock teams.
Benjamin Boyd initiated the survey of this road in 1843 to open up a route from the coast to the Monaro. Boyd Enterprises extended from the coast at Boyd Town to vast holdings on the Monaro plateau. Sheep, wool, meat and sleepers were brought to Eden through the Towamba River Valley by bullock drays. |
