October Fishing Reports

MERIMBULA

Fishing is still tough with limited catches of flathead and reef fish caught at sea but things are definitely on the improve. Anglers heading out to the forty fathom line spotting whales should be dragging small lures as reports of striped tuna are coming in. Plenty of dolphins and sooty turns and this time of year its not uncommon to come across huge schools of cowanyoung baitfish. Trolling lures or baits around any of this activity can be very rewarding with the capture of tuna or sharks. Some anglers are catching a few flathead and jackass morwong on the forty fathom reef  but it can prove to be a bit hit and miss. Kingfish are also on the chew with 6 -8 kilo fish found south of Eden in reasonable numbers. Knife jigs and trolled deep divers are doing the job.  Its also always worth a shot on the way home to have a drop in the shallows off the Pambula River mouth,  the Sticks in Merimbula Bay or in close on any of the beaches as the flathead may decide to come on the chew.  Estuary fishing is still firing  with salmon and tailor the main target but as things start to warm up dusky flathead and bream will be caught. Beach and rock  fishing is still a great option particularly at day break flicking lures for salmon. We have started to have a few insect hatchings so I'm sure that the fresh water fishing is set to fire. Brogo dam would be a good place to start if bass are on your list and anglers chasing  spotted pommy carp are doing well in Lake Jindabyne and Eucumbene.
